A Cautionary Tale

Sunnyside, Houston
2021

The third, and final installation created in collaboration with Houston Museum of African American Culture, in Houston’s Third Ward. The sculpture located near Holmes Road and Scott Street, bordering the Sunnyside and South Union communities, highlights the conditions within many prodominately Black communities.

Intersections, railroads, overpasses, on ramps and exits on some of the most popular roads for commuters often exist in closer proximity within Black, Latinx and otherwise disinvested, disenfranchised communities. There is often a need for better lighting conditions and more protected crossing points for pedestrians that are often subjected to an almost continuous flow of traffic.

A Cautionary Tale instigates the need for public sculpture in Black communities while also making present a work that speaks to the environmental injustices that exist.
