2019HOUSTON – October 21, 2019 – Creatives for Asylum Seekers and Migrants (CASM) will host its first arts benefit, Creative Community Silent Auction Benefiting Houston Immigration and Legal Services Collaborative (HILSC), on Sunday, November 3, 2019, 5PM-10PM at 1120 Naylor Street, Houston, TX 77002. A community-based collaborative effort, the benefit features donated artwork by Houston’s biggest and brightest, established and emerging creatives. Artists participating in the auction include Debra Barrera, Antonius-Tín. Bui, Natasha Carrizosa, Leslie Contreras Schwartz, Julie Tuesday De Vries, Sol Diaz, Heath Flagtvedt, John Forse, Brenda Edith Franco, Jessica González, Marcos Hernandez, jonathan paul jackson, Julia Barbosa Landois, Melinda Laszczynski, Rick Lowe, Mary McCall-Pineda, John Pluecker, Elisabeth Mladenov, Cecillia Norman, Quentin Pace, Moe Penders, Reyes Ramirez, Patrick Renner, Caroline Ryan, Diana Sanchez, Carrie Schneider, Joshua Spiceland, Melissa Studdard, Terry Suprean, Traci Lavois Thiebaud, Aliah Lavonne Tigh, Amy Beth Wright and more.
Artists As Activists:
Over the past three months, a group of Houston-based artists from various creative practices have come together to form Creatives for Asylum Seekers and Migrants (CASM). CASM's mission is to harness our collective energy and talents to support agencies that provide legal aid, counseling, housing, and other resources for asylum seekers and migrants traveling to the US. The November benefit is the first in what will be a series of events organized by CASM to raise awareness and generate resources for Houston-based organizations on the frontlines of the migration crisis.

About HILSC:
In 2013, local organizations working with immigrant communities came together to address the inadequate legal services available in the Houston region. These early meetings eventually became the Houston Immigration Legal Services Collaborative (HILSC, or the Collaborative). Collaborative stakeholders include non-profit legal service providers, outreach and advocacy organizations, the business community, law school legal clinics, public agencies, and private foundations. Using a collaborative approach in decision-making, program design, and implementation, HILSC advances their mission by increasing the quantity of high-quality, low-cost immigration legal service providers who are equipped to serve low-income immigrants. HILSC seeks to streamline access to holistic legal and social services for immigrants, and to be a reliable source for timely and useful information about changing immigration policies and resources.

Creatives for Asylum Seekers and Migrants (CASM), is an organized activist effort established by a Houston-based collective of artists working in various creative media. CASM's mission is to utilize its collective resources to produce arts events that will benefit organizations providing resources such as legal aid, counseling, housing, and fulfilling other needs for detainees. CASM is an earnest effort guided by careful research and dialogue with affected communities, agencies, and organizations working in the best interests of individuals currently detained in the state of Texas.
